Mayflower Montessori FAQ's
Mission
Our mission is to serve a diverse community of families, providing high quality learning environments that meet the developmental needs of the whole child.
Curriculum
We use the AMI-approved Montessori curriculum in all of our classrooms. In addition to classroom curriculum, our school is structured, classrooms are organized, and our staff behavior is influenced by the Montessori philosophy.
Recognition
We are accredited by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI).
Parent Aware Rating
We are a Parent Aware “Four Star” program. Our Parent Aware rating monitors our continued staff development in areas required by the Department of Human Services, as well as provides our prospective parents with additional opportunities for Think Small Scholarships.
Teacher Qualifications
Lead teachers, Assistants, and After Care Staff have AMI Training. Lead teachers have college degrees and seven of our staff has their Master’s Degrees in Education. The training and experience of the adults who work with preschool children or toddlers is a key component in the success of our program.
Relationship with Mayflower Church
Our school is an independent non-profit organization. We were founded as an outreach program of the church and the church supports our mission of offering high quality, affordable programs to a diverse population of families.
Members of the congregation serve on our board of directors, and provide financial support to the school. We align with the church in its social justice and “earthwise” missions, however our school does not have a religious component.
Scholarships
Mayflower Early Childhood Center has a substantial scholarship fund. Our Director and Family Engagement and Outreach coordinator work with parents to apply for scholarships and other types of grants.
Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP)
We participate in the Hennepin County Child Care Assistance Program, and our Admissions Coordinator and Business Manager help families to apply for funding.
Parent Involvement
Our families are very involved in the life of the school, participating on committees and volunteering for school activities and events.
Parent Education
Our Family Resource Center (FRC) hosts workshops to educate and support our families during these important child development years. Free childcare is available to parents attending the workshops. The FRC has a lending library, biweekly Friday Parent Hours, Community bulletin board and a staff person (Family Engagement and Outreach Coordinator) who oversees these programs and supports parents in their parenting journeys.
How do children in Montessori programs transition into ‘traditional’ school environments?
Children emerge from Montessori learning environments prepared for any future school setting. The academics of the Montessori classroom are exceptional, as well as the social and emotional components of the program. The Montessori approach encourages independence, responsibility, and caring and respect for others.
